CNet’s Tech Cars of the Year (2014)

CNet.com is one of the most reliable tech review websites. Throughout the year, journalists at CNet test various components of popular cars based on a tech criteria. Things like the best in-car command system, stereo, and drivetrain are all taken into account in each review that CNet publishes. At the end of the year, the company posts the best tech cars that the CNet team tested.

Here’s this year’s list.

  • 2015 BMW i8: The BMW i8 is a plug-in hybrid that doesn’t look like your typical hybrid. This car has a carbon fiber body, in-car apps that impress, various driver assist elements, and it’s also really pretty to look at. It also has a 1.5 liter turbo-charged engine.
  • 2014 Infiniti Q5OS Hybrid: The interesting thing about this hybrid is that it has a navigation system that also works with the automatic transmission. This Infinit also has smartphone app integration, which is a somewhat new and novel technology.
  • 2015 Ford Fusion Energi: This electric car has an electric motor (as you might have guessed), a lithium-ion battery (7.2-kilowatt-hour), and a 2 liter engine. Ford has also given this car lane changing automation (which we have already covered on this blog), and that’s why CNet puts the Ford Fusion Energi on the list.
  • 2015 Audi A3: The Audi A3 has (according to CNet), “…more robust cabin tech than its higher-priced siblings.” That should about sum it up.
  • 2014 Tesla Model S: The Tesla Model S has been getting a ton of press since its introduction, and for good reason. If you’re into tech and cars, this one is for you. A touch screen command center, LCD instruments, powerful electric engine, and 3G data connection are just some of the things that you’ll find in the Tesla Model S.

Affordability

Most of the cars on this list are of the luxury sort, since luxury car manufacturers tend to have the most money to play around with when it comes to tech innovations. The Ford Energi retails for around $35,000, and that’s largely affordable for most American families — and this is fully intended to be a family car.

The Tesla Model S, on the other hand, retails for around $70,000, which is definitely on the higher end of the price spectrum. The Audi A3 is reasonably priced at $31,000 (base), and the BMW i8 comes in at $140,000. The Infiniti Q50S retails for $38,000. Out of the bunch, the Audi A3 and Ford Energi are the most affordable, with the BMW i8 and Tesla Model S inching into the “toy” category.

Protecting Your Investments

If you purchase a BMW i8 or a Tesla Model S, you can be that those cars will be targets for thieves, and while they do come with their own anti-theft systems, both cars should be further protected just in case theft happens. Really, though, any car that you buy should be protected, since you can never be too careful when it comes to protecting any kind of investment that you have. How can you keep an eye on a car even when it’s been stolen?
